Fresh analysis indicates that patients who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading health publication demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while on the medication, the weight is regained at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Users purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the potential of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain suggests a reversion to original mass in about 18 months.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the results of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs explains the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal might result in the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' means hunger is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Lifelong Issue?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Users who have discontinued the jabs report a powerful return of cravings.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and I was suddenly starving," said a patient.
This challenge is compounded if patients have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Recent estimates indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
- A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for shedding pounds, they are not a permanent fix and maintained weight loss hinges on combined lifestyle changes.
